Talkthru Launches their Babies into Care Project

Talkthru has launched our new 'Babies into Care' project, where we will be offering a 20-week counselling course to birth parents who have experienced a baby under 2 being removed into care.

Our counselling activities encourage positive mental wellbeing by equipping our clients with psychological tools which help transform their lives and improve their mental wellbeing.

We accept self-referrals or referrals from Health Care professionals such as Bereavement Midwives, Doctors, Mental Health Practitioners and IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies), Solicitors, Housing associations, Social Services amongst others. Our professional run counselling support offers programmes tailored to meet client's specific needs.

Our project aims will:

Build Resilience

Through specialised counselling delivered by 2 trained counsellors, helping parents become more resilient, able to re-engage with family, friends and their community, promotion of emotional well-being and ultimately reducing their need for health and social care services.

Outcomes: Parents will feel an increased sense of understanding of their own situation in relation to social services and will start to re-engage with their wider community, where appropriate. They will also become more resilient and better equipped to manage complex personal problems and identify other areas for self-improvement. Parents will maintain stability and effective relationships.

Increased Self-Confidence

Empowering parents through specialised counselling by enabling them to rebuild confidence by learning to accept their past and understanding the potential of their contribution to their child’s life as a parent

Outcomes: Improved mental health status will enable parents to adjust to their new identity as a parent with a child taken into care, they will feel more confident about their contribution to their child’s life in whatever form that may be. They will also start to recognise/value their identity as an individual beyond their parental status and look to develop this.

Awareness Raising

To raise awareness for and challenge perceptions regarding this marginalized group with health-care professionals and professionals associated with the process of babies removed into care through partnering with professionals such as family solicitors and support workers.

Outcomes: Increased awareness among target stakeholder groups about the challenges faced by parents with children taken into care, and the importance of therapeutic interventions to enable parents to reintegrate into society and reduce the reliance on social services etc.
